Reading San Ace Fan Model Numbers: What Every Character Means

A San Ace model number from Sanyo Denki is not random — every position systematically encodes a spec. Learn to read it and you can pin down frame size, voltage, control type, and thickness precisely, without opening a datasheet.

When you see a code like 9GA0924P4G031, it can look random — but every character is chosen to specify the fan systematically. Read it correctly and you instantly know the frame size, voltage, control type, and thickness, without opening a datasheet.

Series (the prefix)

The leading characters identify the fan family/series. The frame material (plastic or aluminium) varies by family, so confirm the material on the specific model’s datasheet.

CodeMeaning
9GASan Ace DC fan (common family)
9GVSan Ace DC fan (another family)
9RASan Ace DC fan (R series)
9G / 9S / 9SG / 9HVOther San Ace families
109ELegacy “109” numbering (different layout)

Frame size

The next two digits are the square frame size in millimetres. A common gotcha: 09 = 92 mm (not 90).

CodeFrame size
0440 mm
0660 mm
0880 mm
0992 mm
12120 mm
17172 mm

Voltage, thickness & control

After the frame size come two voltage digits, then an optional P (PWM speed control; no P means a standard model), then a single digit for frame thickness. Note: the thickness codes are not in numeric order.

FieldCodeMeaning
Voltage12 / 24 / 4812 V / 24 V / 48 V DC
ControlPPWM speed control (absent = standard)
Thickness138 mm
Thickness232 mm
Thickness328 mm
Thickness425 mm
Thickness910 mm

Speed code & the tail

The next letter (e.g. G, J, M) is the speed/performance code, defined per model — generally a higher-ranked letter means higher speed within the same family, with the exact rpm on the datasheet. The trailing digits (e.g. 01, 001, 031, 0011) vary in length and encode the lead-wire / connector / option variant.

Caveat: on non-PWM models (no P) the order of the speed letter and the thickness digit can swap — e.g. 9GA0612G9001 is a 60 mm fan, 10 mm thick. So when there is no P, read the tail in context.

AC fans & other series

The scheme above applies mainly to San Ace DC fans. The legacy “109” numbering (e.g. 109E1724C501) and AC fans use a different layout, so for an exact match always cross-check the official Sanyo Denki catalogue.
